I am starting a new section on OOingle called Girl Geek-Out – Along with being a Couponer/Deal Seeker, Blogger, & Photographer. I am also very much a Tech Geek. I hate to admit it but its hard to hide. This section will be dedicated to explaining what is and isn’t a good deal when it comes to technology but from a girls point of view to help make it more understandable. (HOPEFULLY 🙂 I can get confusing LOL)

With SD Cards we as deal seekers see them for sale at ridiculously low prices on a regular basis, at the checkout in office supply places, on technology bargain sites, Amazon you name it. But are they REALLY a good deal, or just some cheap piece of plastic that will either go corrupt on you, or just operate REALLY SLOW.

Sometimes but not always the Brand names plays a factor in if you want to buy it, but then again not so much. I have plenty of off brands I’ve never heard of to name brands and have yet to have one go corrupt. SO really either way you should be safe there.

Now for speeds this is a whole different thing. Imagine this, you just got a brand new DSLR Camera and bought the first cheap SD card you found at the store. Perhaps a 16 GB for maybe $9.99 sounds like a good deal right? Very possibly it might not have been. SD Cards are classified to 10 different Classes. With Class 1 being the slowest Read/Write Speed and Class 10 being the Fastest. You will typically find a Class 4 in the $9.99 range, and for a point and shoot camera that might work just fine. However when dealing with the Big Boys of Cameras you ALWAYS want to spend that little extra and get a Class 10, otherwise you will find yourself waiting for your camera to be ready for the next shot.

Class Minimum R/W Speed

SDHC Speed Class 4.svg Class 4 4 MB/sec
SDHC Speed Class 6.svg Class 6 6 MB/sec
SDHC Speed Class 10.svg Class 10 10 MB/sec

These speeds apply to SD, Micro SD, Nano SD, SDHC, SDXC

Always Check for the Class
